The 4th and 5th graders gave a wonderful performance in October. Some begin their option to play band instruments with a new teacher. The others will continue with me. Thus, the struggle begins in the groups as to who is “having more fun”. Sigh.
This year I am struggling with teaching pitch. It would be VERY easy to just throw lessons together that addresses pitch in some way and explain the time away. But I do not want to be associated with that kind of “time management”. Real, valuable, verifiable understanding and ability in dealing with pitch in music. Now...how does one accomplish that!? The hardest thing for me is that, as a “music specialist”, I know and understand more about teaching kids to read and add than I do about teaching pitch (and all the permutations involved with the concept of pitch). This disturbs me.
Family seems healthy and I am grateful for that.
