Brahms and Mühlfeld and You.com

I came across a website called You.com. It appears to be a competitor for Google and other search engines. When you land on the page, you will find a typical search box and a blue button further down. Clicking the blue button jumps you to a conversation window with their AI bot. It works a lot like ChatGPT but adds links to resources on the Internet for the information it is talking about.

Shown below is a conversation I had with the AI.bot about Brahms and Mühlfeld.

Me: Can you tell me about Johannes Brahms?

You.com AI bot: Johannes Brahms (German: [johans bams]; 7 May 1833 3 April 1897) was a German composer [1], pianist, and conductor of the Romantic period. He composed for symphony orchestra, chamber ensembles, piano, and for voice and chorus. Brahms's works are often considered to be austere and emotionally reserved, but they also contain elements of the traditional German folk music he grew up with. He is best known for his symphonies, concerti, chamber music, piano works, and choral pieces. He was also an important figure in the revival of interest in the music of Johann Sebastian Bach.

Me: What works did Brahms compose for Clarinet? You.com AI Bot: Johannes Brahms composed several works for clarinet, including the Trio, Op. 114 for clarinet, cello and piano, the Sonata for Clarinet and Piano in F Minor [1], Op. 120, Nos. 1 and 2, and the Schumann & Brahms pieces for Clarinet & Piano. He also wrote some of his later works, such as the Clarinet Quintet and the Clarinet Sonata in E-flat major, Op. 120, No. 2, for clarinet and piano.

You.com AI Bot: Johannes Brahms's clarinet muse was Richard Mhlfeld, a clarinetist and member of the Meiningen Orchestra. He was known for his virtuosic playing and was an important figure in the revival of interest in the music of Johann Sebastian Bach.

Mhlfeld was the clarinetist who inspired Johannes Brahms to compose several pieces featuring the clarinet, including the Trio, Op. 114 for clarinet, cello and piano, the Sonata for Clarinet and Piano in F Minor, Op. 120, Nos. 1 and 2, and the Schumann & Brahms pieces for Clarinet & Piano. He also wrote some of his later works, such as the Clarinet Quintet and the Clarinet Sonata in E-flat major, Op. 120, No. 2, for clarinet and piano.

Robert Schumann wrote two works for Mhlfeld: the Adagio and Allegro, Op. 70, and the Fantasiestücke, Op. 73. Me: Thank you. You.com AI Bot: You're welcome! Is there anything else I can help you with? Interesting. Of course, not perfect. But, certainly a good starting point, especially since it offers links to references you can check out for yourself.

Just in case you are interested, these are the clarinet works written by Brahms, followed by works written for Richard Mühlfeld by other composers.

I do not see evidence that Robert Schumann was influenced to write his Fantasy Pieces, Op. 73 for Richard Mühlfeld, since the piece was premiered by Dresden clarinetist Johann Gottlieb Kotte. Mühlfeld did play the Fantasiestucke with Clara Schumann at their home though.

The Adagio and Allegro, Op. 70 written by Robert Schumann was for Horn (or Violin, Viola, or Cello) and Piano. [I can easily adapt it for Clarinet if you are interested. Just contact me below.]

Reinecke's Op. 79 was a Symphony, so I'm not sure where You.com AI Bot got that from, and his Undine Sonata, Op. 167 was a work for Flute. There is a Clarinet transcription that has gained some popularity.

Camille Saint-Saëns' Op. 94 was written for French Horn. There are transcriptions of Schumann's works for Clarinet.

Again, not perfect. I'd recommend you give it and ChatGPT a try though. Your usage helps expand its expertise and hopefully fix errors like the ones above.
